Lung Cancer Symptoms and Treatment

By Honylyn Urna Bueno

Most people with lung cancer often experience no symptoms when diagnosed at early stage of the disease process. Oftentimes an accidental x-ray finds out the presence of cancer cells. The cancer advancing and the presence of tumor mostly cause the symptoms of lung cancer. Hormones involved and effects of cancer to other parts of the body can likewise make symptoms.

People should be informed about lung cancer symptoms and treatment for a better prognosis.

Primarily cough, hemoptysis (coughing up blood), chest pain and shortness of breath are the most common indicator of lung cancer.

General indicators for this kind of cancer are:

• A cough that does not go away

• A change in a cough you have had for a long time

• Being short of breath

• Coughing of sputum tinged with blood

• Pain when breathing or coughing

• Loss of appetite

• Fatigue

• Weight loss

Cancer cells produce hormones and deliver them in bloodstreams. Other signs of Lung cancer that may be hormone related are:

• Pins and needles or numbness in fingers or toes

• Muscle weakness

• Drowsiness, weakness, dizziness or confusion

• Breast swelling in men

• Blood clots

Treating cancer vary with different factors. These factors include the type of the cancer that you have, the location of the tumor, your general condition, the stage development of cancer.

Treatment for non-small cell lung carcinoma according to the stage are:

STAGE1: A lobectomy where you have to remove one lobe of your lungs is usually done with this stage of cancer. A radiotherapy follows the surgery.

STAGE2: With this stage of cancer, a lobectomy or pneumonectomy where your lungs is removed is usually an option. Doctor may suggest a chemotherapy afterwards. A radiotherapy is likewise advised if the patient do not want to go surgery.

STAGE3: Pneumonectomy is strongly recommended for this stage of lung cancer. Oncologists also recommend a radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

STAGE4: Chemotherapy is advised for patients at this stage. For instances that chemotherapy is not working, a biological therapy called erlotinib (Tarceva). The only aim of medication for this stage is the relief of the symptoms and lessens complication.

Mesothelioma Symptoms And Sign

By Alan Jogja

Early symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 20 to 50 years (or more) after exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breath, cough, and pain in the chest due to the accumulation of fluid in the pleural space (pleural effusion) often have symptoms of mesothelioma in the chest cavity.

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and cachexia, abdominal swelling and pain due to ascites (accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity). Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting disorders, anemia, and fever. If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain, difficulty swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face.

Mesothelioma that affects the pleura can cause these signs and symptoms:

* Chest Wall Pain

* Pleura effusion, or fluid surrounding the lung

* Shortness of breath

* Fatigue or anemia

* Wheezing, hoarseness, or cough

* Blood in the sputum (fluid), cough (hemoptysis)

In severe cases, the person may have many tumor masses. Individuals may develop a pneumothorax, or collapse of the lung. This disease can spread, or spread, to other parts of the body.

Tumors that affect the abdominal cavity often do not cause symptoms until they are at the final stage. Symptoms include:

* Abdominal pain

* Ascites, or abnormal accumulation of fluid in the abdomen

* Mass in abdomen

* Problems with intestinal function

* Weight loss

In severe cases of disease, the following signs and symptoms may be present:

* Blood clots in the veins, which may cause thrombophlebitis

* The spread intravascular coagulation, a disorder causing severe bleeding in many body organs

* Yellowing of the eyes and skin, or jaundice

* Low blood sugar levels

* Pleura effusion

Mesothelioma: The Working Man's Killer

By Shauna Rupert

Back in the day, asbestos was used in the construction of many buildings and places of business. Unknowing workers worked in these structures each day not know that there was danger lurking in the walls and ceiling. Some years later, they were diagnosed with a type of lung cancer that was directly attributed to the asbestos exposure. Luckily today, asbestos is no longer used as a building material due to the risk.

Those suffering from the effects of long term asbestos exposure are often diagnosed with a cancer called Mesothelioma. There are different types of this cancer but the most common is Pleural Mesothelioma which affects the lining or pleura of the lungs. Symptoms include difficulty swallowing, a persistent dry cough, chest pain or painful breathing.

The second type of Mesothelioma that is most common is Peritoneal Mesothelioma. This affects the lining of the abdominal cavity. Typical symptoms of this type of cancer are vomiting, a distended abdomen, a change in bowel habits, and unexplained weight loss.

Mesothelioma is a particularly aggressive type of cancer and does not usually respond well to standard cancer treatments. In addition to being difficult to treat, it is usually not easily diagnosed. Pleural Mesothelioma responds better than other types, but that is only if it is caught in the early stages. Due to the difficulty in getting a timely diagnosis, the prognosis is not usually a good one.

This difficulty in diagnosis makes it critical that you inform your doctor of any known exposure to asbestos. Without this information, your doctor may not consider asbestos related diseases as a potential cause for your symptoms, hence delaying a proper diagnosis. Any symptom, no matter how insignificant it might seem, needs to be reported to your doctor. Armed with this information, he can then order appropriate tests to accurately diagnose any asbestos caused illness.

Each year approximately 2000-300 people are diagnosed with asbestos related cancer. This number is projected to go higher over the next decade. Researchers and scientists continue to study Mesothelioma and its possible causes. Hopefully, with advancements in treatment options, Mesothelioma patients will have better a better prognosis in the long term.

If you are having previously unexplained symptoms, and think you might have been exposed to asbestos, talk with your doctor. You might end up with some tests that were not needed, but you will gain peace of mind when Mesothelioma is ruled out.

Mesothelioma - The Legacy of Asbestos Use In The Industrial Revolution

By Thomas Ajava

Which came first? The chicken or the egg? Well, the same might be said about Mesothelioma and asbestos. In this case, however, the answer is very clear.

The relationship between Mesothelioma and asbestos was only established in the last 100 years or so. This is rather odd because asbestos has been used by human beings for thousands of years. Kings have used it as table clothes. They've dressed slaves in it in ancient times and so on.

In truth, asbestos is a wonder material. It is a naturally occurring substance that is extremely heat and fire retardant. As you can imagine, this makes it perfect for a myriad of uses. So, why was there never a correlation between asbestos and Mesothelioma in the past? The answer is simple. Mesothelioma has a long latency period and can take 40 years or more before it manifests and is diagnosed. In the ancient past, most people didn't live long enough for the cancer to appear. That is no longer the case.

Modern human beings have a much longer lifespan than our ancestors. On average, men and women live into their 70s. This means there is plenty of time for asbestos exposure to result in a Mesothelioma diagnosis. Given this, we have learned slowly and painfully that the wonder material of asbestos may be incredibly heat and fire resistant, but the fibers that make up its core can do massive damage to the human body, often fatally so.

Asbestos comes in different colors, but often has the texture of dirt in its natural form. This is misleading. It is actually a collection of fibers. When these fibers get into the air, they tend to stay aloof for a very long time. Those working around the area inhale the fibers and the health problems start. One can be diagnosed with asbestosis which is a scarring of the lungs. As if that isn't bad enough, once can also eventually develop one of the many kinds of Mesothelioma that are terminal in the vast majority of cases. It is not a good situation.

The relationship between Mesothelioma and asbestos is one that has haunted hundreds of thousands of people who have died as well as their family. Join us in calling for a permanent and total ban of asbestos use throughout the world today.

Mesothelioma and Me

By Stan Gilbert

First a little backstory on what Mesothelioma is:

A rare form of cancer that develops from the protective lining that covers many of the body's internal organs, the mesothelium. It is usually caused by exposure to asbestos.

Now my Grandfather contracted this horrible disease from his years of working around asbestos.

He was also a smoker which greatly increased his risk of getting the disease. For years doctors weren't aware that my Grandfather even had mesothelioma. They concluded his wheezing and cough, shortness of breath, and fatigue were due to either old age or from his years of smoking. But he slowly got worse....much worse in fact.

My Grandfather passed away only a few years ago, 6 months after he visited his seventh doctor. This seventh doctor was smart enough to not dismiss my grandfathers symptoms and he dug deeper. He decided it would be best to give him a chest x-ray and some lung function tests. He also concluded that a CAT scan and MRI should be done. He diagnosed my grandfather with Mesothelioma that same month.

See while my grandfather was working around asbestos the precautions his employers didnt include the necessary things to avoid constant exposure.

After me laid my Grandfather to rest we had a lawyer read to us his last will and testament. It was during this time that the Lawyer mentioned that we may have a case against my grandfathers former employers AND the six other doctors who were too lazy to properly diagnose him which could possibly have led us to cure him.

Mesothelioma Advice for the Ones in Need

By Christopher Arnfield

When you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should seek mesothelioma advice with an experienced mesothelioma lawyer in the event that you need to learn more regarding the procedures that lead to being compensated.

First you should understand that mesothelioma is a rare form of cancerous disease that affects the lungs lining, but it can also evolve in other internal organs, such as the heart or abdomen. 3% of the people who are diagnosed with cancer throughout USA are found to suffer from mesothelioma each year with men being more affected and a larger number than women.

Regardless of the form that mesothelioma takes, it is considered a lethal condition, except for the very lucky cases of benign mesothelioma. After being diagnosed with mesothelioma, the life expectancy is between 12 to 16 months. This prognosis is based mostly on the stage of the cancer related as well to the general health status of the patient.

The mesothelioma condition is connected exclusively to the exposure to asbestos. When asbestos fibers are inhaled or ingested due to the handling of it or being in its proximity, they get lodged in the organ's membrane, in this case in lung's mesothelium, that is the lining that protects and surrounds the lungs. In this way an inflammation results that later leads to the mesothelioma developing.

Asbestos is a mineral that for 100 years has been used in construction industry. It has found its way into the building of many houses as well as public buildings. After people learned (in the 70s) about the danger that this mineral creates to human health, the use of this mineral has seen a significant decline.

But meanwhile the results of handling this mineral years ago can be seen into the 5 existing types of mesothelioma:

- Benign mesothelioma - it is known a variant of the disease that is non-cancerous.

- Peritoneal mesothelioma - 20% of the cases are known to be of this form that affects the abdominal region.

- Pleural mesothelioma - 75% of the cases present in this form that affects the lungs.

- Pericardial mesothelioma - 5% accounts for this form of mesothelioma that is developed in the heart area, its name coming from pericardium, the thin protective lining of the heart.

- Testicular mesothelioma - it is indeed a very rarely met form of mesothelioma.

The symptoms that mesothelioma comes with do not indicate the presence of a lethal disease but often resemble ordinary flu or indigestion type of symptoms.

They are: shortness of breath, loss of appetite, difficulty in breathing, abdominal swelling, abdominal pain, fever, nausea, chest pain, and so on. Due to the fact that these symptoms won't come to the surface for many years, the diagnose of this lethal condition can often only be made when it is unfortunately too late.

I have set up a website specifically for those people who do not know where to start when they find out that they, or someone close to them has contracted mesothelioma. The site has all the information you need to file your case; lawyers, experts, articles by experts, but most importantly, a number of videos by an expert in the field, who will guide you through the process. You will never feel alone using this website resource. I hope that it gives some comfort to those affected. You can go directly to the site here: http://www.mesotheliomaalternatives.com.

Be Part Of The Bandwagon And Join In The Impending Lung Cancer Awareness Month

By Neela Vazzana

Cancer is one the most fatal sicknesses that may harm mankind. One of those is lung cancer. This cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cells in the tissue of the lungs. The main causes of this are long term exposure to tobacco smoke, through genetic factors, radon gas, asbestos and air pollution that consists secondhand smoke. With the booming number of people who are diagnosed with this fatal, it is quite alarming. As an answer to this, November is declared as the Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

How do people observe such big event with a great purpose?

An event like this is done through information drives and campaigns that plan to keep the people informed about the illness and its prevention. Most of the time, promotional giveaways are given out to participants as a souvenir like t-shirts, key tags, brochures and leaflets. All of these are printed with information that pertains to the deadly, sickness.

How does a low-cost promotional item works?

It works both ways. As a cheap promo item, an organization that would conduct such great deed is severing its cost when it comes to its expenditures for marketing. Cheap giveaways like pens, t-shirts, mugs and key chains have proven its worth and efficiency in dispersing the awareness about the issue. Plus, cheap promotional items can be customized according to what the organization wants it to be. They can jazz it up to pattern to the occasion. Talk about a personalized approach on a crusade on Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

What are the promotional materials that work?

There is a long list of promotional products that are right for such marvelous event. But there is only an elite circle of products that are typically used in roughly every occasion like a trade event, product lunch and inter-community feasts. Some of them are cheap promotional t-shirts, key tags, caps, pens, note pad and folios, button pins, magnets to name a few.

How can some be part of such fantastic endeavor?

As a concerned civilian, there are a myriad ways on how you can participate. You can do an online campaign by posting some details about an impending talk or any symposium about the illness in your community. You can use your social networking sites and blogs to let the people know about it. You can help in organizing an event. You can also try fabricating slogans and drawing symbolic photos on promotional materials and sell it for the benefit of the organization that helps people who are devoured by the sickness.

Truly a golden heart will come a long way, if you have other ideas on how you can participate to the Lung Cancer Awareness Month, go ahead and do it.

Lung Cancer Can Be Caused By Asbestos Exposure

By E. K. Johnston

Many people have found that they are simply are not as aware of the complications related to asbestos exposure as they should be. Because of this, some have ended up with lung cancer only to find out later that they have been exposed to asbestos. Even if you do not currently have any medical problems, it might be a good idea to think back through the past ten or twenty years to determine whether there was a time when you may have been exposed to high levels of asbestos. If so, you will know to keep an extra close eye on your health. If you start to experience any of the signs and symptoms related to asbestos exposure visit your doctor immediately.

You might initially experience a dry cough that will not go away, and you could end up having breathing problems. Upon further testing, there is a chance that lung cancer might appear. While there is no absolute cure for cancer of any type, it is important to remember that there are treatments that can possibly send the cancer into remission. Many people have lived for years after being diagnosed with lung cancer. The determining factor is often when the cancer is caught, what treatments are performed and the mental strength of the person going through the treatments.

You will want to make sure that you are keeping yourself and your family away from asbestos when at all possible. Avoid old buildings that are in bad need of repair. Miners and workers who are responsible for removing old building materials have a high risk of being exposed to asbestos, so it is important to make sure that you are using the proper equipment, from breathing masks to whole body suits. This is the best way to make sure that you and your loved ones will not be exposed to asbestos. Remember that you can bring asbestos home on your clothes, putting your children at risk for developing lung cancer in the future.

For those who have been exposed to high levels of asbestos, it is important to make sure that you are doing what you need to do in order to stay as healthy as possible. This means that you will want to have a consultation with your doctor. Explain the history of your exposure to asbestos, including when it and what your concerns are. Explain that you want tests performed to check the condition of your lungs. Make sure that you have not developed lung cancer.

You have good reason to suspect something could be wrong and are entitled to the tests that can save your life. Ask for them. Do not hold back. Stand your ground, and insist on being scanned for lung cancer. If it turns out that you are fine, then you can rest peacefully. Make sure, however, that you go back for periodic checkups because you never know if the lung cancer will form later on.

If you have been exposed to asbestos you may want to consider an asbestos lawsuit to help recover compensation for damages.

Immunotherapy for Cancer Treatment

By James Witherspoon

Your immune system consists of a variety of cells that exist to fight pathogens and other invaders. While the immune system generally wards off bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other problems, sometimes these cells are not enough to overcome powerful diseases such as cancer. However, a new treatment called immunotherapy is being developed to help you fight back against cancer.

Most of your immune system cells are general germ fighters. For instance, cells called neutrophils simply identify foreign particles in the body, attach themselves to the invader, and release enzymes to kill it. Additionally, though, you have specialized cells called antibodies that are specifically attuned to certain germs. It is through the antibodies that you develop "immunity" to a disease--once your body identifies the invader, it will produce antibodies that will always be prepared to attack that specific germ.

Frustratingly, it can be very difficult for the immune system to target and fight cancerous cells. This is because cancer cells are basically your own cells but with dangerous mutations that make them turn into tumor masses. However, doctors and scientists are researching the potential to train your immune system to recognize the cancerous cells. This way, you can fight back against the bad cells yourself. This is called immunotherapy.

With immunotherapy, doctors are trying to strengthen the immune system against cancer in several different ways. First, they can remove cancerous cells, tag them with a "non-self" marker, and then release them into the body. Then, your immune system finally recognizes that these cancerous cells are abnormal, which, in theory, enables them to fight back. Additionally, in some clinical trials, some cancer patients are receiving vaccines that lead to the development of anti-cancer antibodies.

Although some tests for immunotherapy have showed much promise, it is not yet a standard treatment for many different types of cancer.

If you suffer from deadly cancers such as mesothelioma, it is important to learn everything you can about treatment options, including clinical trials and immunotherapy, before you commit to a treatment plan. This way, you stay in control of your life as you pursue treatment.

Top 5 Signs of Lung Cancer to Long-Term Smokers

By Win Ho

Usually in the early of lung cancer, there are no special symptoms. Only when lung cancer is developed to a certain stage, there will be some symptoms, including cough, blood in sputum, fever, chest pain, chest tightness and some other respiratory symptoms. Lung cancer may easily be overlooked or be treated as pneumonia, so to cause the delay condition. People above 40 years old especially have a long history of smoking or passive smoking, must have a regular physical examination annually. People should also be vigilant immediately for medical treatment when the following performance appears, which is helpful to find lung cancer in time.

1. Chronic Cough

Tumour stimulates the trachea, will often lead to irritating cough. This cough has nothing to do with the season, time or medication. This is the most common symptoms of lung cancer, and about 2/3 of the patients have this symptom. People must be prudent when there is a cough of unknown causes. Some people who has a long-term chronic cough must go to see a doctor when he feels that the cough situation has changed.

2. Blood In Sputum

Tumour causes cell necrosis and broken of capillaries, a small amount of bleeding mixed with sputum and so this Intermittent or persistent symptom appears. About 50% of the patients with lung cancer have this symptom.

3. Chest Pain

About 30%-40% of lung cancer patients will appear chest pain, generally not keen intermittent chest pain, mainly shown as stuffy pain or vague pain with uncertain location, may continue from several minutes to several hours.

4. Repeated Fever

Bronchial cavity was blocked by tumor, poor drainage may lead to fever. The body temperature is generally under 38 degrees. Treat early with antibiotic, the body temperature can return to normal, but easy to relapse.

5. Chest Tightness And Shortness Of Breath

Tumor will affect the normal lung function, and will lead to chest tightness and shortness of breath when people are tired, which is the most obvious in central lung cancer.

Early and Late Signs of Lung Cancer

By David Silva

As with most cancers, the earlier you detect lung cancer the better your chances of survival. In fact, when it's caught in the first stages, there's an almost 50% survival rate after five years. This is a remarkable number considering the fact that overall, lung cancer has only a 15% survival rate.

So the earlier it's diagnosed the better.

And that's why being aware of the signs of lung cancer can mean the difference between surviving and becoming a statistic.

The Early Signs

Since the early signs of lung cancer can easily be mistaken for other conditions, it's often difficult to take them seriously. However, if you're experiencing a chronic cough that doesn't appear related to a virus or allergy, wheezing, chest pain, bouts of bronchitis, or a persistent fever ... it's time to pay attention.

Lung cancer symptoms are often related to the location of the lesions, which settle into the tissues of the lung first. That's why the early signs tend to reflect common cold, flu, and bronchial illnesses. Once the cancer moves beyond the bronchia, new symptoms arise.

The Later Signs

Once lung cancer has metastasize and moved beyond the bronchia, the signs can expand dramatically. For instance, if the cancer has spread to the brain, then common signs might include blurred vision, stroke, and migraines. As you can see, these are serious symptoms that could be related to any number of illnesses. The point is this: don't dismiss them.

In addition, signs such as depression, weight loss, fatigue, shoulder pain, difficulty swallowing, and hoarseness should be taken seriously.

When To See A Doctor

While you don't want to be running to your doctor every time you get the sniffles, if the above signs show themselves, especially if they're persistent, it's better to be safe than sorry. This is particularly true if you've been a smoker or are currently smoking, or if you've ever been exposed to asbestos over an extended period.

It only takes a few hours out of your life to make an appointment and visit your doctor. Here are the signs that should inspire action:

- Unexplained loss of weight - Persistent shortness of breath - Stubborn respiratory infections that keep coming back - A chronic cough that has no apparent cause - Pain in your chest - Wheezing - Fatigue (again, if it has no apparent cause)

The point to remember is that your immune system is busy fighting the cancer. This is why you may find yourself constantly run down and battling nagging infections. It's also one of the reason you may experience mood changes and irritability.

Conclusion

There is a caveat, unfortunately. Nearly a quarter of the people diagnosed with lung cancer never experience any symptoms at all. So while these lung cancer signs can serve as red flags, their absence doesn't necessarily mean everything is just fine. Another reason to see your doctor for an annual checkup.

Lung Cancer: Myths, Facts, Choices--and Hope (Paperback)

The sheer volume of information presented here is the strength of this comprehensive manual on lung cancer. Writing with freelancer Wernick, Henschke, chief of the division of chest imaging at New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center, provides a medical perspective on the disease, while McCarthy, founder of the Alliance for Lung Cancer Advocacy, Support and Education (ALCASE) offers support for those afflicted as well as their caregivers. From the outset, McCarthy makes clear that the tendency of family members as well as some health-care professionals to blame smokers (nonsmokers are also diagnosed with lung cancer) when they contract lung cancer not only leads to guilt, but may actually discourage some people from seeking adequate treatment. The authors describe the many forms of lung cancer and their treatments, which include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and alternative therapies. They explain how to apply for clinical trials as well as the benefits and risks of participating. Since earlier detection improves the chances of a cure, the authors recommends the still controversial CT scans for those at high risk for lung cancer (i.e., former or current smokers). This excellent resource details how patients can learn to cope with the physical problems resulting from some treatments, how to sustain themselves emotionally while fighting the disease and ways to navigate the health-care system. An excellent resource. B&w illus.

Surviving Cancer (Paperback)

"When facing a major health crisis, connecting with people is an invaluable lifeline," writes Margie Levine in Surviving Cancer: One Woman's Story and Her Inspiring Program for Anyone Facing a Cancer Diagnosis. Call "friends in the medical field, and then friends of their friends"; call "hospitals, libraries and health clinics... cancer organizations and holistic health centers"; contact intimates and "fellow travelers" (others with cancer) for support. Such networking, says Levine, yields "information that may be more immediately useful... than what you find in books, because it is first-hand, people-driven, up-to-date, and customized to your specific situation by the questions you ask." That said, Levine, in a compassionate but matter-of-fact manner, offers an exceptionally helpful book. She suggests small, practical steps that can make a big difference organizationally, such as using a tape recorder and a medical notebook to record information. She outlines alternative therapies (massage, acupuncture, etc.), spiritual and psychological resources and practices (meditation, prayer, journaling), medications, diet and strategies for dealing with MRIs and stress in general. Recommended for anyone with cancer and their loved ones.

How Cigarretes Cause Cancer

Author: Sharon Bell

How do cigarettes cause lung cancer? In addition to containing many toxic gases, the tar found in your favorite brand has a lot of cancer-causing substances (carcinogens) as well as cocarcinogens which increase the production of cancer cells.

This leads to the development of small cell (oat) carcinoma, the deadliest form of lung cancer, and squamous cell cancer – both of which are usually found in smokers.

"Your risk of lung cancer increases with the number of cigarettes you smoke each day, the number of years you smoke, the amount of smoke you inhale, and the amount of tar and nicotine in the cigarettes you smoke," said Dr. David E. Larson, editor-in-chief of the “Mayo Clinic Family Health Book.”

While lung cancer is primarily a male problem, many women now have the disease, probably because the number of female smokers has increased. In the United States, lung cancer has surpassed breast cancer in terms of cancer deaths in women.

"The higher rates of tobacco-related cancers among men reflect the fact that in the past, more men than women smoked, and smoked heavily. In recent years, the proportion of smokers among males has been steadily decreasing in many developed countries. Unfortunately, the proportion of smokers among women has been steadily increasing all over the world,” according to Drs. Adriano V. Laudico, Divina B. Esteban, Corazon A. Ngelangel, and Lilia M. Reyes in “Cancer Facts and Estimates.”

"With many more women smoking than ever before, the number of women with lung cancer has increased at an alarming rate, so that smoking is now responsible for 75 percent of all lung cancers in women. The cancer rate for female smokers is 67 percent higher than for nonsmokers," said Marrion Morra, assistant director of the Yale Comprehensive Cancer Center at Yale University in Connecticut, and Eve Potts in “Choices: Realistic Alternatives in Cancer Treatment.”

Even nonsmokers aren’t spared from the onslaught of lung cancer. The US Environmental Protection Agency estimates that between 500 and 5,000 cases of lung cancer appear each year in nonsmokers as a result of inhaling someone else's smoke. The side stream smoke inhaled by a nonsmoker has a higher percentage of tar, nicotine, and other poisonous gases - all of which contribute to lung cancer.

"The tobacco industry likes to tell people that there are other causes of lung cancer. But there is no denying the fact that smoking is a major cause of the disease. I don't think we have to look for other causes," said Dr. Calixto Zaldivar, former director of the Lung Center of the Philippines.

Other risk factors for lung cancer include exposure to industrial carcinogens such as asbestos, chromium compounds, radioactive ores, nickel, arsenic, and other irritating substances.

"A worker in these kinds of industries who smokes faces an even greater risk. If you are over 40, smoke two packs a day, and/or are in an occupation that is thought to be cancer producing, you should have frequent medical checkups," Morra and Potts said. (Tomorrow: How to prevent lung cancer.)

Mesothelioma Treatment Trial Enters Phase II For Patients At Columbia University

According to news reports, Columbia University has just entered Phase II of its mesothelioma clinical trial in which two chemotherapy drugs are being tested. The trial is aimed at treating malignant pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma, which are two of the more deadly types of mesothelioma.

The trial will involve approximately 29 individuals and will last nearly six months.

Two of the drugs that will be tested include oxaliplatin and gemcitabine. According to TransWorldNews, oxaliplatin is "a platinum-containing organic compound which targets cancer cells by inhibiting or specifically preventing replication and repair of the cancer cells‚ DNA." Oxaliplatin is from Sanofi Aventis and is manufactured as Eloxatin.

The drug is commonly used in the treatment of colon and colorectal cancers, according to news reports. Gemcitabine, which is from Eli Lilly and Company is manufactured as Gemzar. The drug, according to TransWorldNews is "a cancer drug which similarly targets the replication processes of cancer cells‚ DNA by inhibiting the production of the cellular material which is necessary for DNA synthesis." Gemzar alone is used to treat patients of ovarian, lung, pancreatic and breast cancer. Combined, researchers are hoping the drugs will effectively treat and decrease mesothelioma symptoms. Recently a study from the Respiratory Disease Clinic Heckeshorn in Berlin from December 2008 found that, "a therapy of oxaliplatin and gemcitabine applied every 21 days in mesothelioma patients resulted in an increased rate of control for the disease‚ progression."

Developing Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a deadly form of lung cancer that has been linked to the inhalation of asbestos fibers and asbestos dust. Asbestos is part of a mineral known as vermiculite that was heavily mined during the late 19th century and the early 20th century. It was mined across the country until the 1970s and 1980s when health and governmental regulators discovered the potential risks involved in inhaling the deadly fiber.

However, asbestos can still be found in a number of products today, approximately 3,000 applications, according to the U.S. government. Some of the following are potential uses including:

* thermal, electrical and sound insulation
* cement
* plastic
* resins
* filtration and liquid sterilization
* friction materials
* asbestos textiles
* paper fabrication
* flooring felts
* roofing products
* pipeline wrapping
* brake and clutch pads

Garnering Mesothelioma Assistance

It is imperative for individuals who suffer from mesothelioma to receive both legal and medical assistance from knowledgeable professionals. In order to prolong signs and symptoms of the disease, individuals must seek immediate medical attention.

Also, further discussing the medical issues and legalities surrounding a mesothelioma case will improve the outcome of a mesothelioma victim. Because of the extreme dangers associated with the disease, it may be possible for a victim to receive monetary compensation. Speaking with a mesothelioma attorney will provide increased knowledge of a mesothelioma case.

Things That Can Cause Lung Cancer

Author: Jon Simms

Lung scourged is not just one disease but instead a group of diseases. All forms of bane start cells in the body to change and grow out of power. Most types of growth cells form a lump or bulk called a growth. Cells from the swelling can decipher away and voyage to other parts of the body where they can persist to grow.

This dispersal coursed is called metastasis. When sarcoma spreads, it is still named after the part of the body where it ongoing. For example, if breast growth spreads to the lungs, it is still breast evil, not lung disease.

Another word for cancerous is cruel, so a cancerous growth is termed wicked. Nevertheless not all tumors plague. A melanoma that is not evil is called gentle. Benign tumors do not grow and division the way evil does. They are generally not an attempt to life.

A few cancers, such as blood cancers (leukemia), do not form a tumor. Most cancers are named after the part of the body where the plague starts. Lung scourge begins in the lungs. The lungs are twos clean-like organs in the chest. The right lung has three sections, called lobes. The left lung has two lobes. It is slighter because the sympathy takes up more area on that trait of the body.

The lungs transport air in and out of the body, pleasing in oxygen and getting rid of carbon dioxide gas, a weaken outcome. The lining around the lungs, called the pleura, helps to shelter the lungs and allows them to move during breathing. The windpipe (trachea) brings air down into the lungs. It divides into tubes called bronchi, which split into minor kindling called bronchioles. At the end of the small brushwood are tiny air sacs known as alveoli.

Most cancers of the lungs start in the lining of the bronchi but they can also begin in other areas such as the trachea, bronchioles, or alveoli. Lung melanoma often takes many years to expound. Once the plague occurs, menace cells can crush away and allot to other parts of the body.

Cancer of the lung is a life- threatening disease because it often spreads in this way before it is found. It is the foremost root of tumor loss for both men and women. During the year 2000 there will be about 164,100 new cases of lung sarcoma in this country. About 156,900 people will die of this disease: about 89,300 men and 67,600 women.

More people die of plague of the lung than of colon, breast, and prostrate cancers mutual. Lung disease is somewhat underdone in people under the age of 40. The normal aged of people found to have canker of the lungs is 60. If the disease is found and treated by surgery early, before it has reach to lymph nodes or other organs, the five-year survival tariff is about 42%.

However, few cancers of the lung are found at this early perform. The five-year survival measure for all stages of lung tumor shared was 14% in 1995, the last year for which we have subject numbers. A venture reason is something that increases a someone's unplanned of getting a disease. Some gamble factors, like smoking, can be controlled. Others, such as an anyone's age, can't be misused.

Smoking is by far the important gamble feature for lung canker. More than 8 out of 10 diagnosed cancers of the lungs are thought to significance from smoking. The longer a role has been smoking, and the more packs per day smoked, the superior the imperil. If an anyone stops smoking before cancer develops, the lung tissue leisurely returns to normal. Stopping smoking at any age lowers the risk of lung cancer.

Lung Cancer – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Author: peterhutch

Lung cancer is a disease of uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung. This growth may lead to metastasis, invasion of adjacent tissue and infiltration beyond the lungs. The vast majority of primary lung cancers are carcinomas of the lung, derived from epithelial cells. Lung cancer, the most common cause of cancer-related death in men and the second most common in women,[1][2] is responsible for 1.3 million deaths worldwide annually.

What causes lung cancer?

Smoking

The incidence of lung cancer is strongly correlated with cigarette smoking, with about 90% of lung cancers arising as a result of tobacco use. The risk of lung cancer increases with the number of cigarettes smoked over time; doctors refer to this risk in terms of pack-years of smoking history (the number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day multiplied by the number of years smoked).

Lung cancer most commonly begins in the cells that line your lungs. Smoking causes the majority of lung cancers — both in smokers and in people exposed to secondhand smoke. But lung cancer also occurs in people who never smoked. In these cases, there may be no clear cause of lung cancer. Doctors have identified factors that may increase the risk.

Cancer that originates from lung cells is called a primary lung cancer. Primary lung cancer can start in the airways that branch off the trachea to supply the lungs (the bronchi) or in the small air sacs of the lung (the alveoli). Cancer may also spread (metastasize) to the lung from other parts of the body (most commonly from the breasts, colon, prostate, kidneys, thyroid gland, stomach, cervix, rectum, testes, bone, or skin).

Lung Cancer Symptoms

Lung cancer symptoms are commonly not experienced until the disease had advanced, sometimes delaying diagnosis. The symptoms of lung cancer also mimic the symptoms of other benign illnesses.

The most common lung cancer symptoms experienced are :

Onset of wheezing

Recurrent pneumonia or bronchitis

A persistent cough that does not go away

A sign is also an indication that something is not right in the body. But signs are defined as things that can be seen by a doctor, nurse, or other health care professional. Fever, rapid breathing rate, and abnormal breathing sounds heard through a stethoscope may be signs of pneumonia.

Lung Cancer Diagnosis

To help find the cause of symptoms, your doctor will evaluate your medical history, smoking history, exposure to environmental and occupational substances, and family history of cancer. Your doctor also will perform a physical exam and may recommend a chest X-ray and other tests. If lung cancer is suspected, sputum cytology — the microscopic examination of cells obtained from a deep-cough sample of mucus in the lungs — is a simple test that may be useful in detecting lung cancer. To confirm the presence of lung cancer, your doctor must examine tissue.

How can I prevent lung cancer?

The best way to prevent lung cancer is to quit smoking, or to never start in the first place. You should try and avoid being around people who are smoking; and also avoid pipes, cigars, and marijuana. If you live in an area with radon, you should make sure there is adequate ventilation in your basement to get rid of it. Use a detector to make sure the radon levels are low.

Treatment Of Lung Cancer

Many factors must be taken into account to determine the best treatment for an individual diagnosed with lung cancer. The specific type of cell, the location of the lung tumor, the stage of the disease with possible metastasis (spread to other parts of the body), and the general health of the individual must be considered. Various treatment plans may include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and/or surgery.

Lycopene Lung Cancer Treatment

By Randolph Meresmaa

Lycopene is what gives tomatoes, and several other fruits, their deep red color. But lycopene is also a powerful antioxidant that has shown remarkable effect on degenerative diseases. Tomatoes are the only major dietary source of lycopene. According to a study presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), tomatoes may help reduce the risk of certain types of cancer.

Lycopene is present naturally in human plasma in greater amounts than beta carotene and other essential dietary carotenoids. This may indicates its greater biological significance in the human defense system. The researchers in P&S and Harlem Hospital evaluated the association between lung cancer and lycopene.

Investigators collected blood samples from 93 individuals with non-small cell lung cancer and also from 102 matched controls, in a case-control study. They tested tested the samples for levels of certain micronutrients, including retinol, lycopene and beta-carotene.

The researchers found no significant differences between control subjects and subjects with lung cancer. in most of the micronutrients for which they did the tests. But they did find that lung cancer patients had significantly lower concentrations of lycopene.

After adjusting for age, race, sex, drinking, smoking, vitamin supplements, occupational exposure and season, the investigators found that the group with the lowest levels of lycopene, had almost a three-fold increased risk for cancer compared with the group with the highest lycopene levels.

When the investigators evaluated current smokers, they found that the group with the lowest lycopene blood levels had four times the risk of cancer than the group with the highest lycopene levels. According to Dr. Jean G. Ford, assistant professor of medicine and principal investigator:

"We concluded from our findings that low intake of lycopene may be a risk factor for lung cancer, especially for smokers. Even though our findings are preliminary, they add to the growing body of evidence that diets rich in tomatoes and tomato products are strongly linked to a reduced risk of certain types of cancer."

First Symptoms of Lung Cancer

By Randolph Meresmaa

Lung cancer is the most lethal of malignant diseases worldwide and is still the leading cause of cancer related deaths in the USA. Although the overall deaths in Western Europe and United Stated have decreased since 1991, global lung cancer rates are expected to rise because of ongoing tobacco use.

For the majority of the time lung cancer is clinically silent because they grow from a single malignant cell to a potentially detectable lesion. The majority of people already have the symptoms of lung cancer at the time of diagnosis. In only about 10% of cases is lung cancer discovered incidentally in an asymptomatic patient.One of the first symptoms of lung cancer is cough, which occurs in 45-75% of patients. Cancer types with a predilection for central airway involvement may cause cough earlier in their course. But peripherally located tumors may only cause cough as a late symptom. A change in the character of a chronic cough, such as new hemoptysis or co-existent chills and fever, should raise suspicion of an additional process such as lung cancer.

Tumor involvement of the chest wall, parietal pleura, and mediastinum leads to chest pain as an initial symptom or complaint in 25-50% of patients. Other causes of pain include postobstructive pneumonitis, pulmonary embolism, and rib cage metastases.

5-8% of lung cancer patients experience hoarseness which is usually attributable to unilateral left vocal paralysis resulting from damage to the left recurrent laryngeal nerve anywhere along its intrathoracic course.

Physical exam is a vital component of the lung cancer evaluation as it may provide important prognostic, diagnostic, and staging clues. The outside appearance may look normal or it may reveal debilitation, cachexia, lethargy, pallor, jaundice, fever, or significant comorbidities. Blood pressure irregularities can be seen in conjunction with neurologic or adrenal paraneoplastic phenomena.

A thorough nervous system examination is crucial, especially in patients with headache, sensorimotor complaints, and back pain. Unilateral lower extremity swelling, tenderness, and erythema may accompany deep venous thromboses.

Mesothelioma and Litigation: How to Get Cash For Asbestos Lung Cancer Palliative Care

By Peter Nisbet

Mesothelioma is a particularly nasty form of lung cancer, and mesothelioma litigation is increasingly being used as a means of getting cash for asbestos lung cancer palliative care. Without it, many families would not be able to afford professional care for their loved ones, and would have to tend for them themselves at the worst possible time for them and for the patient.

Incidences of mesothelioma asbestos lung cancer are steadily increasing, which indicates just how insidious this disease is. Caused by inhalation of asbestos fibers, the symptoms can take upwards of 40 years after exposure to appear, and may people who suffer do not even remember being exposed to the substance. It does not take much exposure, and many cannot understand the diagnosis when it is available because they cannot remember ever being exposed to asbestos.

There are no known 100% effective conventional medical treatments for mesothelioma, and the prognosis is generally bad. However, there are several things that can be done to alleviate pain and make the patient’s life more comfortable. While drugs can help, hospice care is an option that takes pressure of the family and provides a comfortable environment for the patient. However, these alternatives can be expensive and if responsibility can be placed on an employer for the exposure that ultimately led to the disease, then compensation can pay for the palliative care.

This is not seeking charity, but rather making those responsible pay for the treatment. A high level of compensation will be needed to pay for the treatment and care needed, and in order to achieve this result you will require the services of a good mesothelioma attorney. Any lawyer will not do due to the specialized knowledge needed to persuade judges and juries that there very few causes of asbestos lung cancer other than exposure to the fibrous silicates that make up asbestos.

The compensation awarded can be very large, although smokers will receive less since their habit can be construed as contributing to the disease. Mesothelioma is not just another word for asbestos cancer, but is in fact a cancer of the mesothelium, a membrane that lines many body cavities, including the thoracic, or chest cavity. The lining of the lungs is called the pleura, so mesothelioma refers to any form of lung cancer involving that membrane. In fact 80% of mesothelioma cases are caused by smoking.

It is therefore very difficult for smokers to blame asbestos exposure for mesothelioma unless they have been working with asbestos. However, a good asbestos attorney should be able to secure a reasonable level of compensation, even for a smoker. It will be a fight though, since the asbestos companies and employers that required employees to work with the substance are aware of the high levels of compensation being awarded, and now actively fight such cases.

When you consult a law firm with a view to instructing them to fight your mesothelioma case, you should insist on talking with the attorney that will be handling your case. You can then discuss your strategy, and you can make sure that your attorney has had previous success with such cases. You don’t want to retain a loser!

Ask questions, and determine the success rate of your prospective attorney in such cases. He or she must also appreciate your condition and understand how you feel, so that they can fight your case properly. Nothing can beat experience in a mesothelioma asbestos cancer lawsuit, so make sure that you get the best you can afford. Better still: tell them their fee depends upon them winning!

What Are the Symptoms of Lung Cancer

By Randolph Meresmaa

It is very hard to detect the symptoms of lung cancer because you may have symptoms like shortness of breath, cough that you that are related to respiratory problems. Knowing exactly what are the symptoms of lung cancer is also important because the earlier it is detected the better your chances are of recovery. The more people are aware of the possible symptoms the easier the treatment will be.

Symptoms of lung cancer can be:

• Coughing that does not go away or is different then before. Smokers who have chronic coughing have a change in how much they cough and how severe the coughing is. • Shortness of breath. It is a common symptom of many medical disorders. • Back, chest or shoulder pain that often gets worse with deep breathing and does not go away. • Coughing up bloody mucus or blood • Wheezing. Wheezing is commonly experienced by persons with a lung disease; the most common cause of recurrent wheezing is asthma, a form of reactive airway disease. • Swelling in the neck and face • Loss of appetite and/or weight loss (Cachexia). It can be a sign of various underlying disorders; when a patient presents with cachexia, a doctor will generally consider the possibility of cancer, metabolic acidosis. • Recurring respiratory infections • Difficulty in swallowing (Dysphagia.) • Numbness and weakness of the legs and arms • Bone pain • Vormiting and nausea • Headaches • Seizures

Many of the symptoms of lung cancer are nonspecific. In many patients, the cancer has already spread beyond the original site by the time they have symptoms and seek medical attention. About 10% of people with lung cancer do not have symptoms at diagnosis.

Learn About Lung Cancer Symptoms

By Sandy Griffin

There are several types of lung cancers, some of which have distinct symptoms, while others are characterized by an absence of any kind of symptoms even in their most advanced stages. This absence of symptoms can make the already difficult task of detecting lung cancer even more difficult.

Here are some of the different types of lung cancer and some of the pertinent facts about each one of them.

The different types of lung cancer are categorized into two basic types: small cell and non-small. Mesothelioma is yet another kind of cancer that affects the lining of the lungs. Some of the more common symptoms include:

-Pain in the chest -A persistent cough that is present for a long time -Wheezing sound while breathing -Shortness of breath -Presence of blood in the sputum -Unexplained weight loss -Fever -Swelling in the face or neck area

Symptoms are typically unnoticeable especially during the early stages of the disease, making the detection of the disease even more complicated than ever and making it difficult to determine whether or not it is necessary to seek medical attention. In the absence of symptoms, knowing the risk factors for lung cancer could help you make a more informed decision.

Considering smoking is one of the major risk factors for contracting lung cancer, giving it up is the first step towards reducing the likelihood of getting any kind of lung cancer. Giving up smoking also lowers the risk of developing other forms of cancer including cancer of the larynx and the throat as well as other parts of the body. A sedentary lifestyle and a poor diet are the other common risk factors.

Studies reveal that almost three thousand people who are non-smokers develop lung cancer every year by inadvertently inhaling second-hand smoke. Unfortunately, despite the fact that no cigarette has touched their lips, they have the same susceptibility rate and the same symptoms as those who smoke.

If you or a loved one suspects the presence of any of the above-mentioned lung cancer symptoms, a visit to the doctor is called for. The fast-multiplying and rapid-spreading nature of the disease, makes early detection all the more important. Though it may not exactly be life-saving, the earlier you detect the presence of any lung cancer symptoms the earlier treatment can be sought, increasing the chances of retarding the progress of the disease. Prevention is of course better than cure and knowing what the risk factors are can help you avoid them, thus lowering your odds of contracting the disease.
