Asbestos cancer mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer in the mesothelium. The mesothelium is a protective tissue layer that protects abdominal internal organs as well as the heart and lungs from rubbing off to other tissues or organs in the body. The only known main cause of this type of cancer is asbestos exposure. Asbestos is a harmful substance. If asbestos fibers are either inhaled or ingested, these can cause inflammation of the internal organs and therefore cause some alterations or mutations. This mutation is where the cancer begins. Workers working in shipyards, power plants, refineries, steel factories, and construction sites are the ones usually exposed to asbestos and are at high-risk for developing this type of cancer.
The early signs and symptoms of asbestos cancer mesothelioma are the following: shortness of breath, chest pain, persistent coughing, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, and night sweats or fever. However, these are the same signs and symptoms found in all other cancers, that's why diagnosis of using CT Scan, MRI, X-rays, and biopsy should be done to determine if it is this type of cancer. The treatment for asbestos cancer mesothelioma can either be through chemotherapy, radiation or surgery. Nevertheless, medical experts are testing newer treatments such as gene therapy and immunotherapy, but these techniques are not yet approved for use.
